Why Cordyceps shows up in endurance research, not just wellness blogs

A look at what the trials actually measured — and what they didn't.

Most supplement ingredients arrive with a story and leave without evidence. Cordyceps militaris is unusual because the story came first — Tibetan herders noticed their yaks had unusual stamina at altitude — and the trials came much later.

This is a short look at what those trials measured, and where the limits are.

What was actually tested

The study people cite most ran for three weeks. Participants took Cordyceps militaris daily while a second group took a placebo, and both were put through high-intensity exercise tests.

Two numbers moved:

  • VO2 max improved by 10.9% in the supplement group
  • Time to exhaustion went up — participants lasted longer before stopping

The placebo group showed no meaningful change in either.

Why VO2 max matters

VO2 max is how much oxygen your body can actually use during hard effort. It is not about lung size or how deeply you breathe. It is about how well oxygen gets from the air to the muscle that needs it.

That is why it predicts endurance better than almost anything else you can measure in a lab.

The part that gets exaggerated

A three-week study on a small group is a signal, not a settled fact. It does not prove the same effect in every person, at every dose, over every timeframe.

This is why we write "studied for" and "may support" instead of promising outcomes. The research allows the first. It does not allow the second.

What this means day to day

Cordyceps is not a pre-workout. There is no caffeine, no spike, nothing you feel in twenty minutes. It builds up over days and weeks.

The people who get the most out of it are the ones who treat it as a routine rather than a boost — two capsules, same time, every day, for at least a month before judging it.

Reading the research yourself

We link every study we reference. Go read them. A supplement that needs you to take its word for things is not one worth taking.
